    A Multi-Gene Genetic Programming Application for Predicting Students Failure at School

    Several efforts to predict student failure rate (SFR) at school accurately still remains a core problem area faced by many in the educational sector. The procedure for forecasting SFR are rigid and most often times require data scaling or conversion into binary form such as is the case of the logistic model which may lead to lose of information and effect size attenuation. Also, the high number of factors, incomplete and unbalanced dataset, and black boxing issues as in Artificial Neural Networks and Fuzzy logic systems exposes the need for more efficient tools. Currently the application of Genetic Programming (GP) holds great promises and has produced tremendous positive results in different sectors. In this regard, this study developed GPSFARPS, a software application to provide a robust solution to the prediction of SFR using an evolutionary algorithm known as multi-gene genetic programming. The approach is validated by feeding a testing data set to the evolved GP models. Result obtained from GPSFARPS simulations show its unique ability to evolve a suitable failure rate expression with a fast convergence at 30 generations from a maximum specified generation of 500.     Mass of Clusters in Simulations

    We show that dark matter haloes, in n--body simulations, have a boundary layer (BL) with precise features. In particular, it encloses all dynamically stable mass while, outside it, dynamical stability is lost soon. Particles can pass through such BL, which however acts as a confinement barrier for dynamical properties. BL is set by evaluating kinetic and potential energies (T(r) and W(r)) and calculating R=-2T/W. Then, on BL, R has a minimum which closely approaches a maximum of w= -dlog W/dlog r. Such RwRw ``requirement'' is consistent with virial equilibrium, but implies further regularities. We test the presence of a BL around haloes in spatially flat CDM simulations, with or without cosmological constant. We find that the mass M_c, enclosed within the radius r_c, where the RwRw requirement is fulfilled, closely approaches the mass M_{dyn}, evaluated from the velocities of all particles within r_c, according to the virial theorem. Using r_c we can then determine an individual density contrast Delta_c for each virialized halo, which can be compared with the "virial" density contrast Δv 178Ωm0.45\Delta_v ~178 \Omega_m^{0.45} (Omega_m: matter density parameter) obtained assuming a spherically symmetric and unperturbed fluctuation growth. The spread in Delta_c is wide, and cannot be neglected when global physical quantities related to the clusters are calculated, while the average Delta_c is ~25 % smaller than the corresponding Delta_v; moreover if MdynM_{dyn} is defined from the radius linked to Delta_v, we have a much worse fit with particle mass then starting from {\it Rw} requirement.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, contribution to the XXXVIIth Rencontres de Moriond, The Cosmological Model, Les Arc March 16-23 2002, to appear in the proceeding

    Abstract The melt-phase synthesis of dioctyltin (IV) and triphenyltin (IV) benzoates were carried out using stoichiometric amounts of benzoic acids and the corresponding organotin (IV) compounds. The reagents were ground together in a mortar and fed into a boiling glass tube. A cannula tube was inserted into the boiling tube to discharge accumulated gaseous products. A syringe ensured a continuous flow of dry Nitrogen gas in the reaction vessel. The compounds are known using wet Chemistry. Their syntheses via the melt-phase were in good yields. The physical properties corresponded to those of the similar compounds prepared by wet chemistry. The IR, 1 H and 13 C NMR data indicate that coordination to the tin atom is via carboxylate group

    Correlation length of X-ray brightest Abell clusters

    We compute the cluster auto-correlation function Οcc(r)\xi_{cc}(r) of an X-ray flux limited sample of Abell clusters (XBACs, \cite{ebe}). For the total XBACs sample we find a power-law fit Οcc=(r/r0)Îł\xi_{cc}=(r/r_0)^{\gamma} with r0=21.1r_0=21.1 Mpc h−1^{-1}and Îł=−1.9\gamma =-1.9 consistent with the results of R≄1R \ge 1 Abell clusters. We also analyze Οcc(r)\xi_{cc}(r) for subsamples defined by different X-ray luminosity thresholds where we find a weak tendency of larger values of r0r_0 with increasing X-ray luminosity although with a low statistical significance. In the different subsamples analyzed we find 21<r0<3521 < r_0 < 35 Mpc h−1^{-1} and −1.9<Îł<−1.6-1.9< \gamma < -1.6. Our analysis suggests that cluster X-ray luminosities may be used for a reliable confrontation of cluster spatial distribution properties in models and observations.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journa

    Clinical Profile and Electrolyte Abnormalities in Hospitalized Under‑Five Children with Acute Gastroenteritis in a Tertiary Health Facility

    Background: Electrolyte abnormalities constitute the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in younger children with acute gastroenteritis.The aim of the study was to determine the clinical profile and pattern of electrolyte abnormalities in under‑five children hospitalized for acutegastroenteritis from November 1, 2014, to January 31, 2015. Methodology: This was a cross‑sectional descriptive study among hospitalized under‑five children with acute diarrhea who were consecutively recruited from November 1, 2014, to January 31, 2015. Relevant clinical data were obtained, while the physical examination was done on all subjects. Serum electrolytes values were determined using the ion‑selective electrode system and compared with standard reference ranges. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 21.0 with the level of statistical significance set at P &lt; 0.05. Results: A total of 108 under‑five children were studied. The majority (101; 93.5%) were &lt;24 months of age, while 41 (38%) of low socioeconomic class background. Metabolic acidosis was the most common electrolyte abnormality followed by hyponatremia and hypokalemia occurring singly or in combination. The case fatality rate was 13 (12.0%). The electrolyte derangements associated with mortality were hypokalemia and acidosis: 11 (84.6%) each, 9 (69.2%) had hyperchloremia, while 6 (46.2%) were reported to have hyponatremia. Conclusion: Electrolyte derangements are common in under 5 years children with acute diarrhea with increased mortality in those with severe acute malnutrition. Proper health education is needed to ensure adequate nutrition and timely use of low‑osmolar oral rehydration solution as well as early referral of cases with persistent gastrointestinal losses in order to save lives.     Long-range correlation and multifractality in Bach's Inventions pitches

    We show that it can be considered some of Bach pitches series as a stochastic process with scaling behavior. Using multifractal deterend fluctuation analysis (MF-DFA) method, frequency series of Bach pitches have been analyzed. In this view we find same second moment exponents (after double profiling) in ranges (1.7-1.8) in his works. Comparing MF-DFA results of original series to those for shuffled and surrogate series we can distinguish multifractality due to long-range correlations and a broad probability density function. Finally we determine the scaling exponents and singularity spectrum. We conclude fat tail has more effect in its multifractality nature than long-range correlations.Comment: 18 page, 6 figures, to appear in JSTA

    AN INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECTS OF POOR SPECIFICATION ON BUILDING COLLAPSE IN NIGERIA

    This paper examines the effects of specification on building collapse in Nigeria. The study became necessary due to the ugly cases of buildings collapsing in the country over the years. In doing so, the study begins with review of relevant literature on the concept of specification, as well as the factors associated with building collapse. The need for specification in building construction projects was enunciated upon. Other factors that culminate in building collapse, such as load types; man-power; technical skills, etc. are discussed herein. The study further examines identifies and documents cases of building collapse in Nigeria to identify the causes and factors responsible for the collapse. Interviews were conducted with practicing professionals in the construction industry. This was done to obtain professional insights and experiences used as part of the data in the research. Findings from this study highlights consequential role of poor specification in causing building collapse, loss of lives and properties. This paper concludes with identifying the relevance of specification in ensuring adherence to appropriate materials and construction methods for structural stability. Recommendations are given to guard against poor specifications that result in the collapse of buildings, properties and ultimately loss of lives
